What is a Trigger Point?

One of the modalities that I specialize in is Trigger Point Therapy. In my opinion, this is the best way to relieve pain. Many of my clients have heard me mention Trigger Points during a session. Often, if I find one, I will treat it the best I can with regard to the clients goals fot the session. (Whether it be to releive pain or to relax the body).

Some of you wandered “What exactly is a Trigger Point?”. Many believe that a trigger point begins as a local injury of any size. Maybe you got in a car accident or opened a door to fast and didn’t relize that you might have torn a muscle. Once there is a tear, the normal blood-carried nutrients are not able to fully supply the area. This results in congestion, poor circulation and tight bands of muscle.

Overtime if these areas are not treated they can go from being a tight muscle to tender points and then to an active trigger point. They can literally spread because the other muscles will compinsate for the damaged area. True Trigger Points are a point of congestion or knot that refers pain somewhere else.

Do you have a Trigger Point?

Trigger point pain is usually described as a deep and dull. Some people will complain of radiating pain and alot report dull headaches. Never assume that your headache is coming soley from a muscle problem. Just know that it is a common complaint. There are referral patterns for the entire body. For instance, a trigger point in the glute muscles have been known to refer pain to the low back. Another common occurence would be headaches caused by one or more trigger points in the neck or upper traps. These are just a few of the problems that can be addressed by using Trigger Point Therapy.
